The Biggest night in music?
Yeah ok. You would think that on the biggest night in music every artist hitting the stage on Grammy night would bring their "A" game. I was covering the Grammy’s for Sirius satellite radio's hip hop nation (www.sirius.comhiphopnation) this past Sunday (2/13) along with Sgt Hawkins (After Hours), Amanda Diva, Crystal, and After Hours (Renada, Andy, Orlando). We all waited for something huge, something big, and something grand. It never came.
First, the opening was like 20 minutes long. It wasn’t that long but is seemed like forever. I had no idea who came out first; it was like I was being shot from all directions. Eve and Gwen Stefani looked hot. Then I blinked and they were gone. You had Black eye peas all over the place. They are good with some hot sauce and collards but musically? I don’t think putting them in a rap category is proper at this stage in their career. Years ago, yes. I will get to more of that later.
Let's talk about Queen Latifah. Her styling was not royal at all. Her outfits were unflattering. You had so much time to prepare and get ready for this big night and that’s how you come out. I’m no fashion expert but the cuts of her clothing looked like cold cuts as opposed to prime grade A cuts. Her attempts at comedy were atrocious. It failed miserably, failed horribly, just failed. I can’t put all the blame on Latifah. There were other culprits like Adam Sandler and Nelly. I know they have a movie coming out, but if their chemistry in that flick is anything like what was on that stage for Grammy night; you can expect a straight to video joint in a month from opening. Christina Milian. How many rehearsals did it take for her not to bump her big head into the microphone just to bump her head on the microphone on one of the “biggest nights in music.” Maybe she was nervous, or had a moment of ditsy chick going on. Perhaps it was some liquor flowing backstage that got the best of her. I don’t know. What I do know is I’m not missing my mark in front of an international audience. J-Lo reached a new low. She revealed what many have been screaming for years. This chick is a disgusting singer. She cracked quite a few glasses and windows. Marc Anthony did a good job. He must really love her to stomach that cackling while lounging around the mansion. Lord! She should have stayed on the 6.
The Grammy’s was not all bad. Mostly, but not all. Alicia Keys turned it out, looking stunning like a real woman should. When she sung “If I ain’t got you”, she made me wanna jump on stage and lay on her piano. Jamie Foxx came on and did a rendition of “Georgia” with her. They were hot until they decided to remix it. Funny, I didn’t see Puffy around. All of that aside, that was one of the best performances all night. Next I will talk about Kanye West, Usher, James Brown, and the lack of hip hop at this fiasco.
